Company Profile

Piedmont Triad Regional Council (PTRC)

Company Overview

The Piedmont Triad Regional Council (PTRC) is a voluntary association of local governments that serves as the designated regional planning and coordination organization for the Piedmont Triad region of North Carolina. It is one of North Carolina's 16 regional councils and works to help local governments address challenges and opportunities that are best managed on a regional scale.

PTRC serves approximately 78 member governments across a 12-county region, including communities in and around Greensboro, Winston-Salem, and High Point. The service area includes the counties of Alamance, Caswell, Davidson, Davie, Forsyth, Guilford, Montgomery, Randolph, Rockingham, Stokes, Surry, and Yadkin.

Company History

The Piedmont Triad Regional Council (PTRC) traces its origins to 1968, when the Piedmont Triad Council of Governments (PTCOG) was established to help local governments throughout the region collaborate on planning, development, and public service initiatives. Initially serving an 11-county area, the organization focused primarily on coordinating federal grant programs and regional planning efforts. In 1979, the region was divided into two separate councils—the Piedmont Triad Council of Governments and the Northwest Piedmont Council of Governments—to better address local needs. This structure remained in place for more than three decades, during which the councils expanded their roles to include economic development, technical assistance, and regional cooperation among member governments.

As the Piedmont Triad became increasingly interconnected, regional leaders recognized the benefits of a unified approach to planning and development. In 2011, the two councils merged to form the Piedmont Triad Regional Council, creating a single organization serving 12 counties and approximately 78 member governments. Today, PTRC is one of North Carolina’s largest regional councils, providing services in regional planning, workforce and economic development, aging and housing programs, environmental initiatives, and local government support. Through collaboration and resource sharing, PTRC continues to help communities address regional challenges and promote sustainable growth throughout the Piedmont Triad.
