- Detention Deputy TEA (Non-Certified)
Description
This position is a non-certified position while completing a CJSTC-approved academy. Continued employment is contingent upon successful completion of the academy and passing of the Florida state certification exam. This position is responsible for maintaining care, custody, and control of detainees in the Leon County Detention Facility under the supervision of certified Detention Deputies and Detention supervisors. This position helps to maintain the overall safety, security and good order of the facility. The position exercises judgment and individual initiative in the performance of routine duties and in emergency situations, often without immediate supervision. The position adheres to the agency core values of honesty and integrity, accountability, teamwork, trust and respect and commitment to excellence. To be successful in this position, the employee must demonstrate competency in Florida Model Jail Standards (FMJS), Standard Operational Procedures and LCSO Policies and Procedures, officer safety, knowledge of geographical layout of the Leon County Detention Facility, defensive and control tactics, conflict resolution, general communication skills (both written and oral), inter-personal skills, problem solving and team building skills.

Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Prior work experience or volunteer hours in a correction's setting or related environment preferred but not required.
18 years of age - Citizen of the United States
- Must not have been convicted of any felony or misdemeanor involving perjury or false statement, nor have received a dishonorable discharge from any of the Armed Forces of the United States.
- Must maintain a valid Driver's License
- Correctional Certification or ability to become certified in the State of Florida
- Agency specific requirements – must reside in Leon County or a surrounding county and satisfy all disqualification factors outlined in the application for employment.
- Must have passed the Florida Criminal Justice Basic Abilities Test (FBAT/CJBAT) for Corrections within the last four years https://home.pearsonvue.com/fdle/bat
PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES REQUIREMENTS:
Mobility-Frequent standing for extended periods of time, walking for extended periods of time, stooping, bending, climbing stairs, may be required to drive an agency vehicle and/or transport inmates; constant use of a computer; use of a firearm
Lifting-Able to lift 50 pounds
Visual-Constant overall binocular vision; constant color perception, constant eye-hand coordination; constant depth perception; frequent reading/close-up work; constant field of vision/peripheral
Dexterity-Frequent repetitive motion and reaching
Hearing/Talking-Constant requirement to hear normal speech; constant hearing on telephone and radio; ability to hear faint sounds; constant talking on telephone/radio
Emotional/Psychological-Potential contact with hostile individuals; direct inmate contact, exposure to emergency situations; may be exposed to trauma, grief and death; frequent public contact; decision-making and concentration
Special Requirements-Ability to behave respectably and with utmost integrity even when off duty. Shift work (days or nights) with rotating days off including working weekends, nights, holidays, and/or overtime; May be required to respond for any critical incident, manmade or natural; must be able to appropriately wear and operate a self-contained breathing apparatus
Environmental-Occasional exposure to varied weather conditions and increased risk of occupational exposure to hazardous or infectious materials.
- Knowledge of the geography and layout of the Leon County Detention Facility and its property including highly secured areas and exit access areas.
- Knowledge of first aid practices and the ability to render physical assistance to victims.
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
- Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
- Ability to cope with stressful situations and perform calmly under stressful conditions.
- Ability to work closely with others as a team.
- Ability to prepare and present clear, accurate, concise and objective written and oral reports.
- Ability to enforce the law with firmness, tact and impartiality and to deal courteously with the public.
- Ability to maintain a level of physical conditioning to be able to physically subdue, restrain, and apprehend inmates.
- Ability to meet requirements of periodic in-service training in all high liability areas as well as all requirements to maintain the position's certification.
- Skill in calmly and systematically eliciting critical information from individuals whom may be injured and/or highly emotional.
- Ability to report to work timely, consistently and as scheduled.
- Ability to report to work in times of an emergency disaster as declared by local, state or federal officials or agencies.
- Ability to work rotating 8-12 hour shifts involving day-time and night-time hours as well as weekends.
- Ability to perform all functions of the job classification without posing a direct threat to the health or safety of other individuals in the work place.
- In compliance with 943.13 F.S., the position requires the employee to be at least 18 years of age, be a citizen of the United States, be of good moral character, must have completed a basic training program for Corrections approved by the CJSTC and pass the Florida certification examination.

- Knowledge of applicable laws, ordinances, rules and regulations and the application of such to the performance of the job.
- Ability to work mandatory overtime as designed by Administration.
