Description
The part-time Marketing and Communications Assistant focuses on creating compelling written and visual content to showcase Friends of Oakland Animal Services’s (FOAS) impact and increase community engagement. Responsibilities include capturing video footage and photos to produce content for various channels: social media platforms, email newsletters, website, print materials, etc.
While this position is responsible for FOAS content, it requires close collaboration with Oakland Animal Services (OAS) to capture relevant photos and video footage. This position plays a key role in expanding FOAS’s reach by building awareness, visibility, and engagement, and inspiring community support for our lifesaving work.

Requirements
Job Duties and Responsibilities
Create compelling content that showcases the impact of Friends of Oakland Animal Services’ work.
Write engaging stories, posts, captions, and other content to highlight FOAS’s work and impact.
Capture video footage and photos of shelter activities, adoptions, events, etc., highlighting both animals and people.
Recruit and work with volunteers to edit and produce videos and visual content for use on social media, websites, and other platforms.
Monitor engagement on FOAS social media platforms and respond appropriately to comments/messages.
Monitor content performance across platforms to identify high-impact stories and optimize future content strategy.
Assist with identifying and setting up new social media platforms to expand FOAS’s digital presence and reach new audiences.
Support creation of newsletters, donor updates, impact reports, and other external communications.
Provide support with other marketing materials (e.g. print media) as needed.
Assist with content planning, marketing efforts, and overall marketing strategy execution.
May assist with efforts to develop and maintain consistent brand voice and messaging.
Qualifications and Education Requirements
Associates degree or equivalent from an accredited college or technical school preferred.
At least one year of experience in content creation and social media.
At least one year of experience working or volunteering with an animal care, rescue, or shelter preferred.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Commitment to the mission, goals, and success of Friends of Oakland Animal Services.
A creative mindset and strong grasp of current trends to produce engaging content that builds support for the mission.
Proficient videography skills with the ability to capture and craft compelling stories.
Strong computer and technical skills in content creation and editing.
Excellent writing and editing skills, with keen attention to detail.
Demonstrated expertise in creating and managing content on Instagram, Facebook, X, TikTok, Canva (and other equivalent tools).
Basic knowledge of animal handling practices and interest in animal welfare.
Comfort working around animals and in an animal shelter environment.
Positive attitude with the ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relations with the public, volunteers, and other employees.
Flexible, adaptable, an aptitude for effectively prioritizing multiple tasks, and a strong work ethic.
Excellent organizational, time management, and communication skills.
